Show Notes For "Growth Blockers" Podcast
to the Family Second Program
I’m your host Philip Shelley,
PShells, along with the Fam, Divina, Isabella, Everette, Eva, and Dallas, we
say What’s Up my peeps in the seats.
I pray you are well and
moving forward in God’s Grace and Love.
It has almost been a year
since I started this Podcast. September 3rd, 2016 is when I answered
the call to teach God’s Word to the Family, and I have no intentions to stop.
We together as a family would
love to pray for you and lift you up, so please email us at
Today I want to challenge
each family to seek Revival and Growth inside your family. I want to focus on
those 2 terms today, Growth and Revival. I believe we grow through Revival. Now
you might be thinking, are you talking about those church meetings that would
go on for a week or weeks where multitudes of people got saves, delivered, healed,
filled, and changed. They were awesome, but no. I’m talking about a type of
Revival that takes place in you and your family that whatever you do in this
life, the glory is given back to God. The example I follow is always Jesus,
because to glorify God on earth was Jesus’ clear purpose. To prepare and live
in Revival, it is necessary that we possess the same desire to glorify God. The
bible say He will not share His glory with another (Isa. 42:8). But He will make
the glory of His Person, His Power, and His Presence clear and obvious to and
through those who are consumed with passion to know God and give all the glory
to Him. Glorifying God is the Holy Spirit’s intent in Revival (John 16:14). As
individuals are revived and families transformed by the mighty workings of the
Holy Spirit, all the glory will be given back to the Father. So, my question to
you is, are you and your family glorifying God in everything you do. Is it your
purpose as a family? Believe me when I say that when you get a hold of this
concept it will change you and your family dynamic and lives all together.
It’s great to have this
growth to reach revival in you and your family. But today it is imperative that
I talk about first the blocker, or inhibitors, to this growth. I can go on and
on and make you feel good telling you all you can be in Christ and give you a 3
step process on how to glorify God. But I believe we need to know our enemy
first, the one that wants to stop you from receiving all God has for you. Once
you know your enemy and his intention (steal, kill, destroy), you’ll have a
better chance to grow in revival. So, what are these Growth Blockers? Now,
these are spiritual in nature, but are made clear and obvious (manifest) through
our everyday lives. Which means, we need to look for them. A lot of times they
are not obvious and clear.
1.The Devil: The
Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the
devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” We
are warned how the devil walks or roams about like a lion. When lions hunt,
they look for weak, young, isolated, unguarded animals. They are the ones
marked for attack. Here is the devil’s ultimate purpose; to destroy us. Not to
merely hurt, maim, or discourage, but to devour and destroy us. How does he do
this you might ask. Well I’m glad you asked. He does it when he gets us to bow
to circumstances, pressures, and forces of his evil design, hoping to make us
give in to him. How do we overcome this? We adopt the reverse we B.O.W. to
Jesus. The one you Believe, Obey, and Worship. Jesus overcame, refusing to bow
Satan’s devices (Matt. 4:8-10). If we grow in Him, it will bring the same
ability to resist or stand against the devil (1 Peter 5:9). And as I’ve told
you before, be clothed in the full armor of God, and then dress your family in
it if they can’t dress themselves. Be armed with the Word of God (Eph.
6:10-14), believe Him (Heb. 11:6), obey Him (1 John 3:24), and worship Him (John
4:23). With this you will receive Christ’s overcoming victory over the devil.
2.The World: James
4:4 says, “You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world
makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the
world, you make yourself an enemy of God.” The spirit of the world is one of
the continual and persistent enemies of the believer. Now, when I say world,
I’m referring to the world system, which is all its values, mind-set,
philosophies of life, and priorities that are contrary the will and way of God.
Remember, that the world suggests that your success requires you to turn away
from the path of Godliness, to neglect developing your relationship with God. Jesus
reminds us though, that a life without God or the things of God, it is
worthless, regardless of appearance (Mark 8:36). Now Paul, in Romans 12,
provides us a strategy to combat the pull of the world. He says that through
the renewal, or reprogramming (I always say switch your thinking) of our minds
the Holy Spirit’s power can transform our minds (Phil. 2:5, 13; Titus 3:5). It
also redirects us towards the things of God (Phil. 4:8). So, to gain victory
over the devil, resist him! To gain victory over the world, renew your mind!
Nature: Galatians 5:16, 17 says, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your
lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful
nature want to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants.
And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature
desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not
free to carry out your good intentions.” The sinful nature as an enemy is a New
Testament idea that focuses on the carnal, natural habits of fallen humankind. These
impulses are the most immediate enemy of the believer who desires to live a
life under the control, influence, and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Look at
what the Bible says. It says in Romans 7 that the desire alone to do good is
not enough to overcome our sinful nature (Romans 7:21). So, how do we overcome
it? We are called to war against it; to live our lives in a tug-of-war as our
sinful nature urges us to indulge and the Holy Spirit constrains us to
righteousness. Victory in this war with the sinful nature is found in #1- A
constant continuing in a right relationship with Jesus (Galatians 5:25), #2-
understanding that true strength is found in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:10), and
#3- continually submitting (ut-oh) to the influence and urging of the Holy Spirit
(Eph. 5:18). Victory comes when we take these Practical steps, avoiding and overcoming the pull of our

The easy answer to “how to change this world” is “Love each other”. The hard answer to “how to change this world” is also, “Love each other”. How can one thing be so easy, but so hard at the same time? The divisiveness in this nation is enough to give you a headache, but also enough to say something needs to be done. When we pick and choose truths from God’s Word that fit our own emotions or agendas, we fail to live in the Grace God freely gives.

I loved playing football. I even cried the last game I ever played in high school. Yes, this big football player was there just crying my eyes out knowing it was the end. Even though it was the end, there were some valuable lessons I took with me into this journey of life.
Practice was never the best part of playing football, especially in the Texas heat. But it did have its moments. One of those moments was the tackling drills. When you hear the word drill, it usually meant you did it over and over again. It was where one person would stand still while the other person ran toward him, burying the helmet into his chest and taking him to the ground. Sounds fun, right?!
There were some things you had to remember while tackling though. One, you had to take the right angle so you could put your helmet into the opponents chest. Then, you had to make sure you rapped your arms around him so you could take him to the ground. One without the other would not accomplish much. If you just used th…

"A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart." Matthew 12:35a
You've might have heard the saying, "If you talk the talk, walk the walk." Meaning, if you talk a good game, play a good game. Which that means, do what you say you're going to do because actions speak louder than words. Are you telling yourself you can make it? That you are more than a conqueror, and God will fight my battles. I like how David in the Bible, when he faced Goliath, gave his victory speech before he was actually victorious. We need to start doing that. Tell the Devil and this world what David told the giant. "Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill and cut off your head! And the whole world will know that there is a God!" What do you need to change to get a better perspective? If you change your perspective, most times you change your situation. And let ev…
